Eight Foods That Will Help Cure Your Hangover

A hangover is a result of the alcohol robbing the body of nutrition. The ethanol in alcohol is a diuretic that increased urine production and causes dehydration. The liver and kidneys work overtime to process the alcohol. This results in decreased blood glucose levels.

When one has a hangover, the only thing he or she can think of is how to get rid of it fast. The multitude of symptoms, including nausea, headache, fatigue, irritability and dry mouth can last for hours after a night of drinking. While there is no magical cure, foods that replenish the body with the missing nutrition will help reduce the symptoms of a hangover.

1. Chicken Noodle Soup - A bowl of soup works in many ways to get rid of a hangover. The chicken and noodles contain nutrition that is essential for bodily functions, such as potassium. The broth helps to restore the salt and electrolytes that is lost when dehydrated. It also has high water content to rehydrate the body.

2. Bacon Sandwich - Although this may not be the best thing for a diet, the protein in the bacon breaks down amino acids and helps to restore brain neurotransmitters. This increases mental clarity and decreases fatigue and headaches. The bread raises low blood sugar levels, which is what causes nausea during a hangover.

3. Ginger - This has long been a cure for nausea or upset stomach pain. Ginger tea is an ideal solution to calm the stomach and rehydrate. Thai or Indian cuisine that features ginger is another choice. Gingerbread cookies made with real ginger also provide the body with carbs to raise blood sugar.

4. Fruit - The nutrition value of fruit provides that body with many vitamins and minerals that are lost during drinking. The main one is vitamin C, which fights toxins in the stomach.

5. Virgin Bloody Mary - The ingredients in a bloody mary, especially the vegetable juice, give a quick boost of vitamins and minerals. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a good idea to drink more alcohol in a bloody mary drink the morning after. It will only delay the inevitable and usually makes it worse.

6. Milk and Dairy Products - Milk is a complex ingredient that contains many trace vitamins and minerals. Drinking a glass of milk or eating some yogurt will provide the body with a shot of nutrition to help heal.

7. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich - This food is simple and easy to prepare. It has three hangover cures: protein in the peanut butter, sugars in the jelly and carbs in the bread.

8. Pizza or Other Greasy Foods - Pizza has several different food groups that help battle a hangover. It has protein, carbs and veggies. Grease coats the stomach, which reduces nausea and helps the body better absorb the nutrition.
